The city of Eskilstuna was the center of the hardware industry in Sweden. Eskilstuna known for its metal working since the second half of the 17th century. As early as in the 18th century, standard fittings were produced and sold throughout Sweden. The hand forging was industrialized from the middle of the 19th century and a number of small metal factories were set up for the mechanical production of different types of builder’s hardware.
These were spread all over the country and soon also on export. The Swedish hardware industry was dominated by the companies in Eskilstuna, They produced hardware for doors and windows such as locks, door handles, hinges and all kinds of window fittings. In the middle of the 20th century, construction methods developed quickly and several of the small metal working companies could not keep up with the market demands. At the same time, manufacturing at some companies became so rationalized that further small ones were closed. Changes in the commercial structure and imports from the Far East severely affected Eskilstuna’s metal working companies in the 1960s and -70s.

Samtidigt blev tillverkningen hos några företag så rationell, att ytterligare småföretag slogs ut. Handelns omstrukturering och import från fjärran östern drabbade Eskilstunas beslagstillverkare hårt på 1960- och 1970-talen.
Builder´s hardware has been developed over the years. Old patterns and manufacturing methods have disappeared and new ones have been introduced. This all together had the effect that there are no companies today, who still manufacture all the hardware we used to see on doors and windows.
Eskilstuna Kulturbeslag AB, however, wants to carry on the old traditions of Eskilstuna as an iron manufacturing town. We therefore continue, where many of our predecessors ended. Using their models, we are now producing the well-known fittings. We produce the fittings as they looked in the old days. Our assortment dates back to 1700 and ends around 1960. This means that we market hand forged fittings and produce factory-made products.
While other manufacturers have moved their production to eastern Europe and China, Eskilstuna Kulturbeslag AB keeps the production in Eskilstuna, where we have a factory of 1200 sq.m. and 17 employees (2021). We use Swedish cold rolled high tensile steel in most of our products. Since we have no foundry, castings are bought from other companies which use our casting models when manufacturing. Our brass products are polished and unlacquered so over time they will darken. All hand forged products are produced by Swedish blacksmiths.
